Gail Clarke

Alexander Technique Teacher Somerset Taunton Yeovil BristolI qualified as an Alexander Technique Teacher in 1991 and went on to teach at the Welsh College of Music and Drama, the Cardiff Consultancy for the Alexander Technique, and I have taught on Alexander Teachers training courses. Since 1992 I have maintained a private practice in Somerset.  I teach both individual Alexander lessons, and corporate and management training.

I bring practical and diverse skills to my work as an Alexander Teacher, including my study of voice work and it’s relation to the whole self.

My daughter Lisa is an Alexander Technique Teacher in Bristol who  participated in the evaluation of Alexander Lessons for the alleviation of back pain.

Please note that I no longer practice as a Craniosacral Therapist

I work in partnership with my partner Mike Rawlinson so here is his bit!

Since qualifying as an Alexander Teacher in 1989, in addition to individual lessons I have assisted on Alexander teacher training courses, and have led workshops at a national conference of Alexander Technique Teachers.  I am an experienced workshop leader specialising in movement, and creative and performing arts, I teach the Alexander Technique in one to one lessons in South Petherton.

For nearly twenty years I have maintained a parallel career as a professional character clown performing at schools, arts festivals and theatres throughout the UK

My early career began as a research scientist and I attained the academic requirements necessary to become a Licentiate of the Royal Institute of Chemistry, after which I studied Economics and Politics at the University of Manchester. This was followed by a move to Wales where I joined a community pioneering medium scale organic farming, which I followed by setting up a studio pottery and teaching three dimensional art and design to GCSE level. I have also taught in technical colleges in Manchester and Wales.

Many people seek the help of an Alexander Teacher because they want an alternative treatment for a bad back or other problem, and are surprised to find that we are not therapists, and that Alexander Technique lessons are not a therapy. Instead pupils, are taught how to move and think in a way that inhibits the harmful habits that are causing their problems. Others come because they have heard that lessons from a teacher of the Alexander Technique can help to improve performance in activities in which they want to excel - music, sport, dance, riding, golf, acting, singing and so on, and begin an exciting journey of self discovery and improvement that will often have surprising and unexpected results.

We both trained on three year full time training courses approved by of The Society of Teachers of The Alexander Technique (STAT), the professional body that regulates the teaching of the Alexander Technique and training of Alexander Teachers. If you would like to know more, or to find a teacher near you, click on the STAT link below:

Although often associated with complementary medicine or alternative medicine, Alexander Teachers don't cure or heal, but teaches a better way of  using ourselves, and we certainly don't make any claims. We specifically do not claim any cure, treat or alleviate any medical condition such as arthritis, bad back, pain, RSI, breathing problems, headaches, depression, migraine, and general problems with, knees, ankles, hips, scoliosis, sciatica, stress, ME chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, neuralgia, and a whole lot more.

Please note that we teach individual Alexander lessons - we will only instruct groups or classes on the understanding that they are introducing the principles and not teaching the Alexander Technique. We re sometimes asked if the Alexander Technique is an alternative to other therapies such as osteopathy, Craniosacral Therapy* Bowen, or Pilates, but they can work well together and occasionally we will suggest that a potential pupil seeks treatment from an osteopath or cranial osteopath before a course of Alexander lessons.

It's not all about health problems either - people come for Lessons in the Alexander Technique to improve their abilities and skills in activities as diverse as dancing, singing, public speaking, rowing (the British team that won the Olympic gold medal had Alexander Lessons), dressage (them too!) horse riding, archery, and playing a musical instrument. Anything that involves using the whole self from juggling for jugglers to acting for actors will benefit by improving what Alexander called 'The Use of the Self.' Even if you aren't an opera singer (yes them too) but spend your time looking after children or sitting at a computer, it is likely that you will see some improvement in what you do by learning the Alexander Technique!

Does alternative medicine work? Does complementary medicine work? Come to that does conventional medicine work? The answers will appear on this site soon!

Although we are not therapists and do not treat any medical conditions, we have found craniosacral therapy to be effective for many chronic conditions
